UAE will always remain protective shield for refugees: Hamdan bin Zayed

ABU DHABI, 22nd September, 2016 (WAM) – The UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is exerting significant efforts to address the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on the innocent people, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region, and President of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), affirmed on Thursday.

”The UAE is playing a pivotal role in backing international efforts aimed at easing the suffering of the Syrian refugees,” Sheikh Hamdan said in a statement on the occasion of the UAE’s announcement at the UN Leaders’ Summit on Refugees to welcome 15,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years.

Sheikh Hamdan reiterated the UAE’s commitment to advance humanitarian rights of refugees to live in dignity as per the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and support of Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The announcement, he stated, came within the UAE’s commitment to its humanitarian responsibility towards the Syrian refugees and its contribution to international efforts to address the refugee crisis.

HH noted that the UAE was at the forefront of countries which supported the Syrian refugees since the eruption of the crisis five years ago by providing them with life-saving essentials in a number of camps it established in Jordan, Iraq and Greece.

”The UAE’s initiatives towards the Syrian refugees went beyond humanitarian, relief and shelter assistance, to include vital development projects in areas of education, professional training for capacity-building, and psychological support,” he further added.

”The UAE will remain the protective shield for refugees from the severe repercussions of refugee, working hard to alleviate their exacerbating suffering and preserve their dignity,” Sheikh Hamdan affirmed.

Sheikh Hamdan called upon the international donors to give generously and honour their commitments towards the Syrian refugees and urged the world relief agencies to enhance their humanitarian partnership to improve the living conditions of the refugees.
