UAE committed to supporting UN's gender equality, women empowerment efforts

ABU DHABI, 18th October 2016 (WAM) – Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations has reiterated the country’s commitment to supporting the UN’s efforts towards gender equality and women empowerment.

In a statement she made today on the inauguration of the United Nations Women’s Liaison Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States (GCC) in Abu Dhabi, Lana Nusseibeh said the UAE was among the first countries to provide political and financial support to the UN Women, since its establishment in 2010.

“We are confident that the UN Women will work to empower women and girls of all countries and ensure their engagement in all sustainable development fields on an equal footing with men,” she added.

She also said that through its membership in the UN Women’s Executive Board for two consecutive sessions, the UAE have been playing a pivotal role in setting the international organisation’s strategic plan.

“Under the stewardship of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, the UAE has been instrumental in supporting the strategy and its agenda for women, peace and security, at all levels,” she concluded.
