RTA wins “Excellence in GIS” regional award

DUBAI, The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, RTA, was awarded the “Excellence in GIS Implementation Award” at the GISWORX 2018 Award, EGI Award, which is a major regional prize awarded by the GISTEC, one of the region’s leading specialist GIS organisations and is a representative of the ESRI, a global leader in spatial analytics.

The award was unveiled during the annual GISWORX Conference, which was recently held in Dubai and was attended by representatives of leading government and quasi-government authorities, as well as private businesses from the UAE and around the region. The event attracted international experts, specialists and keynote speakers.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, was thrilled with the award, as it reflected the RTA’s efforts to adopt the latest technologies, especially in IT and geospatial systems, and provide effective public transit network services. Capitalising on such technologies will achieve the happiness of customers, including public transport commuters, and there is a need for further efforts to improve efficiency and protect information, which is an integral part of the RTA’s core values, he added.

Al Tayer made these comments while accepting the award, which was presented by the GIS Team from the RTA’s Corporate Technology Support Services Sector.

The RTA won the award due to its implementation of geospatial technology in displaying and analysing spatial data, which has also improved the efficiency of its fieldwork, through the external GIS e-Gateway that serves the RTA’s engineers and inspectors on site. It also supports the “Smart City” drive and integrates the GIS with the RTA’s technological systems.

“The RTA is always keen to adopt the latest technologies, to facilitate procedures and process online transactions, with the aim of playing a leading role in this global sector, to achieve prosperity and provide a decent living,” said Maher Shirah, Director of IT at the RTA’s Corporate Technology Support Services Sector.

“Winning the award clearly reflects the RTA’s efforts to keep pace with the latest technologies, to improve and widen the scope of GIS in a sustained environment,” he added.

The EGI Award recognises authorities that promote and encourage innovation and research in GIS implementation and rewards their relevant efforts.
