More than 5500 Afghan security personnel killed in first 8 months of 2016: SIGAR report

KABUL, 31st October, 2016 (WAM) — The US Forces-Afghanistan, USFOR-A, has announced that 5,523 Afghan National Defence and Security Forces, ANDSF, service members were killed and an additional 9,665 members were wounded, between1st of January, 2016, and 19th August, 2016.

According to a report carried by the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, SIGAR, the Afghan forces suffered a total of 15,000 casualties during the period, of which, 5,523 were fatalities.

The report added that the Afghan government lost 2.2% territorial control during this year’s fighting.

“Of Afghanistan’s 407 districts, 258 were under government control or influence, 33 were under insurgent control or influence, and 116 were “contested,” the report said.

The US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction said that at least 257 Afghan security personnel lost their lives in ‘insider attacks’ from the start of the year and at least 125 others were wounded.

The report, released yesterday by SIGAR, comes as the Taliban group has intensified attacks across the country since announcing its spring offensive in mid-April this year.

The group has vowed to continue its insurgency as it enters its 15th year, despite the on-going efforts of the Afghan government to end the violence through reconciliation.
