ABU DHABI, The Afghanistan-Pakistan Coordination Meeting on the Common WPV Reservoirs, which concluded in Abu Dhabi today, boosted international polio eradication efforts, said Abdullah Khalifa Al Ghafli, Director of UAE-Pakistan Assistance Programme, UAE PAP.
Al Ghafli said that the two-day meeting, which was held as part of an initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to promote global polio eradication efforts, complements the work of the UAE PAP in the fight against the polio virus, with the help of the World Health Organisation, WHO.
Under the UAE’s polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan from 2014 to 2017, 254,415,400 vaccination doses were given to over 43 million Pakistani children under the age of five, which contributed to a decrease in the numbers of polio cases in Pakistan from 306 in 2014 to 54 cases in 2015, and 20 cases in 2016. In 2017, the number declined to only eight cases, a decrease of 97 percent.
