Malta takes over EU Presidency

BRUSSELS, 2nd January, 2017 (WAM) — Malta yesterday received the rotating Presidency of the European Union, EU, succeeding Slovakia. It is the first time that Malta has held the presidency, which is for a six month period.

Over the duration, the Presidency is expected to focus on the 6 key areas of migration, the single market, security, social inclusion, Europe’s neighbours and the maritime sector.

In a statement on the occasion, Dr. George Vella, Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that the policies of the Maltese Presidency will focus on strengthening the vision of the EU and its credibility as a guarantor of peace, prosperity, and fundamental rights and values, especially with its closest neighbours in Europe, the Mediterranean and Middle East countries.
