S. Korea confirms new case of Zika virus

SEOUL, 19th September, 2016 (WAM) — South Korea has confirmed an additional case of the Zika infection, raising the number of people infected with the virus to 13, local health authorities said Sunday.

The 28-year-old man came back from a recent trip to the Philippines and was confirmed to have been infected with the mosquito-borne virus on 17th September, according to the Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Previous patients were infected with the virus after coming back from trips to countries including Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, the Dominican Republic and Brazil.

The virus, first discovered in Africa, has been linked to thousands of birth defects in newborn babies like abnormally small heads and improperly developed brains.
