PARIS, 29th January, 2016 (WAM)–Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), has received the 2015 Geopolitical Studies Award from the Observatory of Geopolitical Studies (OEG) at the French Senate.
The OEG also granted him Membership to its Scientific Council. This came during a ceremony organised by the Observatory, on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, as part of the visit made by Dr. Al-Suwaidi to the French capital, Paris. The ceremony was attended by a large number of French, European and Arab parliamentarians, academics and diplomats.
Dr. Al-Suwaidi received the 2015 Geopolitical Studies Award in recognition of his intellectual efforts and his numerous and rich research works, and for being one of the thinkers who have enriched the intellectual and research life in the Arab and international arenas. Dr. Al-Suwaidi was praised for his unconventional method in tackling pivotal issues and for his serious writing on the dangers and escalating threats of terrorism and extremism.
Dr. Al-Suwaidi expressed his happiness for receiving this award, praised the special relations between the UAE and France and thanked the French Senate and OEG. He said that this recognition will encourage him to work harder and exert more efforts to counter terrorism and extremism with enlightened thought.
“This recognition is not for me only,” he said, “but is a recognition to the UAE, its wise leadership, its enlightened and tolerant approach, and its efforts to create an environment that encourages thinkers and researchers to perform their roles along the path towards progress and prosperity. My achievements at the personal levels and my achievements in the capacity as Director General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research would not have been possible without the big support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and President of the ECSSR.”
In his remarks on this occasion, Dr. Charles Saint-Prot, Director of the OEG said that Dr. Al-Suwaidi is a prominent thinker and a visionary when it comes to dealing with important international issues. He praised the works of Dr. Al-Suwaidi, referring in particular to The Mirage, which is considered an encyclopaedia on political Islam, and has contributed significantly to shedding light on political religious groups. He explained that Dr. Al-Suwaidi is a strong defender of moderate Islamic values against extremism and an open thinker who calls for dialogue between cultures, which makes his ideas especially valuable in our age of instability and prejudices.
Dr. Saint-Prot reviewed the most important topics in The Mirage, and noted that it contains a comprehensive study of the political religious groups, refuting their false grounds, and clarifying the vast difference between the misguided ideas promoted by such groups and the real Islam and its values of moderation. He added that such a book is an important intellectual contribution in the light of the chaos in the Middle East due to these groups and their harmful practices. He suggested that The Mirage provides a plan to trap such groups, block their ways, and rid the world of their dangers.
He added that OEG is particularly proud that Dr. Al-Suwaidi is a member of its scientific council, and wishes to benefit from Dr. Al-Suwaidi’s long scientific and research expertise that has contributed to making the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research one of the most prestigious think tanks in the Arab world and highly respected globally. He said that the Centre enjoys a wide network of partnerships and collaborations with other think tanks around the world, which has consolidated its position and strengthened its role in the promotion of fruitful dialogue between cultures.
Dr. Saint-Prot concluded by stressing that Dr. Al-Suwaidi is a clear example for the important role a researcher and thinker can play at critical moments in history. He said that Dr. Al-Suwaidi plays a constructive role in the society in which he lives and in the process of human development in general, by adopting positions that defend human and civilized values against any extremism that is anti- civilization and anti-progress.
