Sheikh Mohammed, much-liked leader: paper

ABU DHABI, 25th January, 2016 (WAM) — A UAE newspaper has said that the increasing role of social media in various aspects of life makes it imperative that these channels are utilised as key drivers in creating a positive impact on the society.

“Social media can be an important tool for development, knowledge and innovation when used effectively,” said The Gulf Today in an editorial on Monday.

“This fact has been successfully proved by none other than Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who is now the most popular leader on Facebook in the Gulf Cooperation Council, with more than 3 million “likes” on the platform, as per a new study by Burson-Marsteller, a leading global public relations and communications firm.

“Sheikh Mohammed, who joined the social networking site in 2009, also ranks third in the list of the most followed leaders on Facebook from the Middle East and North Africa.

“Sheikh Mohammed had earlier highlighted that social media channels have a major role in creating constructive engagement, which can stimulate innovative thinking for the development of various sectors in the community through the sharing of experiences at the local and regional levels.

“Despite great achievements that have placed Dubai on top of the world in multifarious fields, Sheikh Mohammed has always remained connected with people across all sections, capturing their hearts.

“The much-admired leader, who has more than 11.4 million followers across a number of social networks including Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google +, is a pioneer in using social media platforms in the Arab world.

“Over the past eight years, Facebook has emerged as the platform of choice for world leaders and governments to engage with their constituents. The UAE is one of the countries that has embraced technology and put it to productive use. The result is reflected in the country’s amazing growth.

“Sheikh Mohammed has often mentioned about his vision to make Dubai the Arab world’s first Smart City, where various aspects of life are interconnected, thereby improving the quality of life for one and all.

“He is a world leader, a pioneer extraordinaire, who lets work speak more than words. He views social media as a tool that can inspire people towards progress and stir minds and hearts towards unity and coalition.

“No wonder his fan-following keeps increasing by the day,” concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
