WAM NEW YORK, 27th September, 2013 (WAM)–H. H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Foreign Minister, attended on Thursday the Ministerial Meeting of the Syrian Friends Group, held on the sidelines of the 68th session of the General Assembly of United Nations.

The UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, Oscar Fernandez Taranco, reiterated in his speech to the meeting the position of UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon that the only solution to the Syrian crisis is a dialogue that leads to political settlement.

He noted that the Geneva Conference 2 on Syria aims to bring the Syrian parties to the table, adding that the UN Secretary General hopes the Geneva 2 Conference will be held to settle the conflict in Syria.

Taranco, on behalf of Ban Ki Moon, urged the Syrian leaders to take hard decisions to resolve the conflict. He welcomed the letter sent by a representative of the Syrian National Opposition Alliance to the UN Security Council last week, in which he expressed readiness of the opposition alliance to take part at Geneva 2 Conference. He added that the representative said it was their duty to keep Syria united in a democratic state that reflects the aspirations of its people. The representative had warned that the alternative would be chaos.
