Further precautionary measures to avoid Japanese plant mistakes

ABU DHABI: It is reassuring that the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation has granted the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) a license to construct two reactors, after an extensive technical review, a major local newspaper said.

The way is now clear for ENEC to safely go ahead with the construction of the power stations, the Gulf News said in an editorial comment.

The review, according to the paper, covers the safety of the site, quality assurance for construction, radiation safety measures and physical protection, among other measures. “Following the Fukushima nuclear incident in Japan, the UAE has taken further precautionary measures to avoid mistakes made in the Japanese plant.” “It is necessary that the safety and operating procedures of the nuclear reactors constantly be updated to take into consideration the latest technical and other developments. The UAE has awarded contracts to build four reactors and they must be kept at the cutting edge of atomic safety and technology for the good of the country,” the paper further said.
