SHARJAH, — Safeguarding children while using their smartphones was the subject of a workshop held by the Child Safety Campaign, an initiative of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, SCFA, in Sharjah, in co-operation with the campaign’s technical partner, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, TRA.
Titled “Phone Safety,” the workshop targeted parents from among council employees and from the Executive Office of Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SCFA, and aimed to instill a sense of security for when young people use modern communication devices.
Held as part of the third edition of the Child Safety Campaign, “Child Safety in Cyberspace,” the workshop sought to raise parents’ awareness about the dangers posed to their children by smart phones and other electronic devices, especially when there is a lack of proper parental control. It also aimed to introduce parents to methods that can be used to encourage children to use these devices in a positive manner.
Hanadi Saleh Al Yafei, Department Director at the SCFA and Head of the Organising Committee of the Child Safety Campaign, said, “We are implementing the third edition of the campaign in order to reach the highest levels of child safety, taking into account the major challenges we face with the rapid technological developments witnessed today. Such ever-accelerating evolution makes it imperative for us to guide our children to use technology as a positive tool to enhance their knowledge and expand their horizons, while at the same time ensuring their safety and protection from cyber hazards.”
“Through this workshop, we aimed to reach out to parents starting with those who we work with at the SCFA and HHEO to educate them about the risks their children face from smartphone use when there is a lack of proper instruction and guidance. We want to encourage parents to strengthen the bonds with their children and to ensure that they take extra care when allowing them to use smartphones by teaching them how to use the devices safely.”
The Child Safety Campaign was launched under the directives of the wife of His Highness Ruler of Sharjah, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the SCFA. It promotes awareness about children’s safety, protection, and social stability to ensure children are physically and psychologically healthy, and live in stable family environments.
