ABU DHABI, Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of State, said that the UAE’s participation in the G20 Summit, which will take place in Bali, Indonesia from 15-16 November, comes as part of the UAE’s commitment and consistent efforts to enhance international cooperation and joint action.
During a media briefing on the UAE’s participation in the G20 Summit that was held on Friday, Al Sayegh said that the UAE is participating in the G20 Summit as one of four guest countries.
He noted that the UAE is participating for the second time after first attending when the summit was chaired by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He stressed that this participation aims to strengthen the UAE’s role within the G20 framework by contributing effectively to all workstreams.
“We have conveyed the directives of small developing countries, with a focus on sustainability and climate change, through our participation in a variety of workstreams,” he said.
Al Sayegh commented that the G20 Summit, which was held for the first time in 1999, is an annual gathering of representatives of the world’s major economies. It plays a strategic role in enhancing international economic cooperation. Indonesia’s G20 Presidency has adopted an ambitious plan entitled “Recover Together… Recover Stronger,” which identified three priority issues, namely global health architecture, digital transformation, and sustainable energy transition. “These priority issues are also in line with the UAE’s Next 50 strategies and plans,” he added.
Al Sayegh spoke about the objectives of the UAE’s high-level participation, stressing the country’s keenness to encourage a balanced, sustainable, and comprehensive recovery of the global economy.
“The UAE is a global economic hub. With our relentless efforts, we have aimed to ensure the sustainability of food and medicine supply chains through our foreign trade, ports, and advanced logistics facilities,” he noted.
Al Sayegh explained that the UAE’s participation in G20 will enhance its cooperation with the group’s member states and consolidate the country’s high-level position as a dynamic and ambitious economy.
“The UAE, through working groups, has underlined its responsible role in the energy markets and reviewed its key agenda in the clean energy sector,” he added.
In this context, Al Sayegh pointed out that during its participation in the workstreams, the UAE highlighted its commitment to reaching net-zero by 2050, as well as stressed that dialogue and diplomacy are the best option for building trust, resolving crises, supporting global peace and stability, and strengthening international solidarity.
He indicated that the UAE also highlighted the importance of multilateral action based on its belief that the G20 Summit is at the forefront of international cooperation platforms that play an active role in supporting prosperity and cooperation among peoples.
Al Sayegh stated that the UAE’s participation in the G20 Summit will witness the launch of a set of initiatives related to its work in the climate and health sectors, stressing the UAE’s support for Indonesia’s presidency to achieve priorities set for this year’s edition.
Al Sayegh also pointed out that during the G20 Sherpa meetings, the UAE underscored its commitment to reaching constructive and effective global action in several sectors, including health, education, digital economy, industry, agriculture, investment, and confronting financial crimes.
The UAE acknowledges the importance of a strong and comprehensive multilateral system to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, he added.
