Ahmed bin Mohammed approves 5th School Olympic Games in Dubai

DUBAI, 1st November, 2016 (WAM) — The High Committee of the School Olympic Games has approved the 5th edition for 2016 – 2017, and Dawoud Al Hajri, Assistant Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee, was named as a Head of the Executive Office of the Programme.

The announcement was made during a meeting of the School Olympics High Committee held yesterday in Dubai under the chairmanship of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE National Olympic Committee, in the presence of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development and Chairman of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, and scores of representatives of sports institutions.

Sheikh Ahmed said, “The UAE’s sport witnesses significant progress thanks to the unlimited support made by our leaders to the young Emirati athletes in order to hone their skills and leverage their performance so as to hoist the UAE’s flag at international sports arenas.”

“The School Olympics Programme is the fruitful outcome of the vision and directives of our prudent leaders who took corrective procedures by focusing attention on the base of the pyramid represented in schools, which are replete with such promising talents. Identifying such talents and instilling the values of noble sports in their hearts would secure a healthy sports generation,” he continued.

H.H. Sheikh Ahmed added, “The challenge is renewed with each edition of this programme, which has become a communication link with the youngsters at different schools across the UAE so as to identify their skills and put them on the right track to the best interest of the nation.”

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan also hailed the great strides made by the School Olympics Programme in materialising its lofty objectives such as grooming students at such an early age and identifying their different talents and tastes as per a scientific method in collaboration with all strategic partners. This way, he said, the programme would prove success, become a national project and pay dividends.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum approved 9 games in the 5th edition: athletics, swimming, judo, taekwondo, fencing, archery, shooting, badminton (first time), and Jiu-Jitsu.

The attendees also appreciated the efforts put by Dubai Sports Council, under the chairmanship of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, for his support to hosting the fifth edition of the programme in Dubai. The council is following the arrangements and preparations for this edition in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee in order to render this edition a success.
