CAIRO, 8th September, 2016 (WAM) – H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, chaired the UAE delegation at the 146th session of the Arab League Foreign Ministers Council, which began today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League.
The agenda of the council, held under the chairmanship of the Republic of Tunisia, which succeeded the Kingdom of Bahrain, included the report of the secretary-general on the activities of the secretariat and the procedures for implementing the resolutions of the council of 145th and 146th sessions. It also included the semi-annual report of the commission on the follow-up of the implementation of resolutions and commitments of the 2016 Nouakchott summit, the issue of Palestine, and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
The agenda also included developments in Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Iran’s occupation of three UAE islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Mousa. Iranian interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries, as well as the need to take a unified Arab stance with regard to the violation by Turkish forces of Iraqi sovereignty.
There were a host of other topics such as backing of peace and development in the Republic of Sudan amid the unjust embargo imposed on the country by the United States. The country is banned from purchasing spare parts or renting aircraft. Therefore, the siege threatens the safety and security of civil aviation in Sudan.
Support for the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Republic of the Comoros, and the peaceful resolution of the Djiboutian – Eritrean conflict, as well as highlighting the risks of Israeli armaments, were on the agenda.
It also included a proposal to set up nuclear weapon-free zones and for other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East region. The agenda proposed ways to combat international terrorism, and covered the Arab national security issue and Arab relations with regional and international blocs.
The meeting was also attended by Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League.
The UAE delegation includes Juma Mubarak Al Junaibi, UAE Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, and Jassim Al Khalofi, Director of Arab Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC).
